Course Title: Instructional Design - 3 credits
      Spring Term 2011

Course Description:
   This course will consider processes for designing instruction for effective and efficient delivery. Students will explore examine various models of ID, analyze research and practice the various processes. Students will explore and use various forms of technological media to determine their benefits and limitations in designing instruction. The course includes lab work as well as readings and lecture.

Course Goals:
   Students will:

  • explore and use theories of designing instruction
  • utilize the elements and principles of design
  • learn typographical principles
  • demonstrate appropriate use process in delivering instruction
  • demonstrate increased knowledge in integrating a variety of instructing media
  • learn steps in the design of interactive media
  • utilize a variety of media and software to create information sources.
Competencies:
   Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:
  • recognize and use effective communication skills in a variety of media as related to the uses of computers in educational settings,
  • effectively apply word processing, image manipulation and interactive authoring to create communication sources,
  • work effectively on computer tasks both individually and in small learning groups,
  • evaluate the quality and instructional potential of a variety of forms of communication,
  • create information sources in a variety of formats and media,
  • create a interactive website to effectively communicate educational information,
  • clearly explain the rationale of an informational source and critique the effectiveness of communication of a variety of informational sources,
  • produce several informational sources using a variety of media including a culminating project at the end of the class.
Readings:
   There will be a variety of sources of readings. The instructor will structure the course around one book, Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology by Robert A. Reiser adn John V. Dempsey. While no one book will be required for this course, for the success of the student it is strongly recommended that several books be used by the students as a part of the course. Refer to the readings for more details.

Assignments:
   Assignments will be uploaded periodically under the link Assignments. Typically uploads will be done on Saturday and the activities of that week are to be conducted during that week and before the next Sunday. Specifics for some assignments are given with the assignments.
  1. Write reviews of two journal articles and respond to other reviewers online
  2. Create a text-oriented information source using Word
  3. Create a image-oriented information source using Photoshop
  4. Create an interactive informational source using an webpage authoring program
  5. Write a rationale for each project
  6. Particiapte in discussions on textbook and journal articles
  7. Complete a final project
Grading Criteria:
  • Participation in online discussions and class activities - 5%
  • Journal reviews (2 @ 5% each) - 10%
  • Projects and rationale (3 @ 20% each) - 60%
  • Final project - 25%
Grades will be posted on the Internet from time to time. Use this posting to verify the completion of your assignments.

Plagiarism policy:
    Much of the work we do in this class involves using online electronic text as a resource. If you use information you have found online, you are expected to paraphrase and make it your own. If you use another writer's works, you must put those words in quotation marks and cite where they came from. If you cut and paste without crediting your source, you are plagiarizing. Plagiarism is unethical and can lead to a failing grade.
