Assignments

For students enrolled in GEOG 411W (CRN: 10340), I will assess your learning in this class from the following assignments (for details about how these assessments will be reflected in grading, go here):

  1. Approaches to people, space and place. This assignment is an opportunity to formally analyze cultural geographic theories about people, space and place. Details for this assigmment will be provided on Moodle. But, generally, you will choose two sections from the main course text by Gieseking et al to focus on. The first section you choose will be for weeks 2-6 and the second for weeks 7-10. You will choose readings from those sections both for yourself and others, as well as related readings from other sources. You will be responsible for leading discussions about your sections and will write a review essay on your section theme at the end of each unit.
  2. Reflective essay. At the end of the term, you will write an essay reflecting on what you've learned from the class as a whole. Details will be provided in week 9.
  3. Weekly experiments. Most class sessions will begin with a short field experiment. You will keep a notebook on these experiments. Notebooks and notes can be in whatever format you choose - paper or electronic, words or pictures, multi-media. However you choose to keep your notes, be prepared to share what you have in class discussions and online. I recommend that you come to class prepared for the weather. Experiments will be posted in discussion fora on Moodle and will include guidance on how you can do the experiments when you miss class. These experiments are an opportunity to demonstrate different approaches to people, space and place and to relate those approaches to the world.
  4. Learning assessments. At the end of most class meetings, I will ask you to complete an assessment focused on what you learned from a peer that week. These assessments are opportunities to practice reflection and self-assessment, a feature of Integrative Learning.

For students enrolled in GEOG 511 (CRN: 10344), I will assess your learning in this class from the above assignments and an additional project that you will plan and design in consulation with me (for details about how these assessments will be reflected in grading, go here).
