Subject Indexes

The Argus Clearinghouse

http://www.clearinghouse.net

The Argus Clearinghouse is an index of topical guides. Typical guides are sites that compile information on a specific subject.

This resource is useful when you wish to search for a very specific topic.

The World Wide Web Virtual Library

http://www.w3.org/vl/

The World Wide Web Virtual Library is a subject catalog. The topic list can be viewed alphabetically or by library category.

Yahoo!

http://www.yahoo.com

Yahoo! was one of the first attempts to index the information on the internet. It is particularly useful for finding a company's Web site or if you want an overview of sites. It is a good place to start a search.

Yahoo! allows the use of the Boolean operator AND.

If Yahoo! doesn't find hits for your search, it will automatically search the AltaVista database. If you are using Netscape Navigator, the status bar will show the message "av.yahoo.com contacted, waiting for reply..." when AltaVista has been contacted. If don't want to search AltaVista, click on Navigator's Stop button.

Yahoo! also maintains a good group listing of search engines and other search resources such as phone book indexes.
