Summative Reflection

The interpreting program, here at Western Oregon University, has provided many great personal and professional experiences and lessons, as well as other beneficial opportunities for me as a student. Over the past five terms I have learned so much about discourse analysis, the demand-control schema, mind mapping and other techniques for note-taking, right-versus-right thinking (the ethical issues involved in the interpreting field), the tasks involved in simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, and, due to self-assessments of more recent works, I have been able to identify my strengths and weaknesses and develop a Professional Development Plan for the months of March 2009 to June 2009.
The most important tool that I have learned and utilized during the past few terms has been self-assessment. No matter how much I practice and build up my skills, none of it would matter unless I was able to look at my work objectively and find ways to improve. Self-assessment has been very beneficial to me in that identification. In assessing my own work, as well as receiving input from my peers, I have been able to learn a lot about my process in order to better my interpreting work. Also, I have been able to develop a plan that will help me achieve my goals for the remainder of the year.
Both my past and my present experiences will help shape my future person, as an individual and as a professional. With this program I was able better my skills as an ASL signer, as well as those skills involved in interpreting between the ASL and English languages. I will continue to learn how to be a better person, and transfer that into my work when I go out into the field. I am more likely to make ethical decisions in tough circumstances because of this program. I will also continue to work hard to meet the goals outlined in my professional development plan. With this program I have grown into someone with the potential to be the best interpreter I can be, and to provide the best service to both d/Deaf and hearing consumers.
