THE PERIODIC TABLE

The arrangement of the chemical elements into tabular form is called the periodic table. In this table the horizontal rows are called periods, and the vertical columns are called groups or families. The periodic table is one of the most important general tools available to the chemist because it arranges the 111 known elements so that information about a given element can be determined from its position in the table.

History of the Periodic Table
Although Dmitri Mendeleev is often considered the "father" of the periodic table, the work of many scientists contributed to its present form.
Alternate Periodic Table Designs
Since 1869, numerous table designs have been proposed to demonstrate the periodic law.
