The Thelema Trio performs Walczyk's Refractions during their 2nd USA tour, which includes performances at University of Central Missouri (March 24), University of Wisconsin Parkside (March 26), University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (March 27-28, & 30), and Denison University (April 3). Thelema will record Refractions prior to their tour as part of their 2nd professional CD recording. The trio gave the European premiere of the work on February 17th at Borrel-Nootjes - the music academy of Deinze, Belgium.


The Hutchins Consort performs Walczyk's Octet Comparsas March 7-9, 2008 in LaJolla, Newport Beach, and Fallbrook, CA.


Walczyk's SabAdzida! for symphonic band wsa selected for Symposium XXXIII by the Virginia chapter of the College Band Director's National Association. Walczyk will conduct his work with the Virginia intercollegiate symphonic band at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg Virginia February 8-9, 2008.

Walczyk's Children's Folksong Suite for band will be premiered at the OMEA state convention in Eugene, January 25, 2008 by the commissioning ensemble - Leslie Middle School (Danh Pham conductor). The work will then be performed at the Michigan State University band festival in April by the DeSoto (TX) High School band.

MMC Recordings releases Walczyk's Cappricio on the label's Perspectives CD. Walczyk's work was recorded by Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony.



PERSPECTIVES


The Ukraine National Symphony Orchestra premieres Walczyk's Concerto Gaucho May 17-20, 2007 at the Kiev World Music Festival. The work features Yuriy Kornilov, principal trumpet of the St. Petersburg Orchestra and the Ukraine National Symphony.



The West Salem High School Wind Ensemble premieres Walczyk's SabAdzida! March 15-17, 2007 at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival. The ensemble is conducted by WOU instrumental studies director Ike Nail.

The Hutchins Consort performs Walczyk's Octet Comparsas February 23, 2007 at Schulman Auditorium in Carlsbad, CA with a repeat performance at the Irvine Barclay Theatre on February 25.


Chamber Orchestra Kremlin will perform Walczyk's award-winning work Haupango at Carnegie Hall on Saturday October 28th, 2006. Walczyk's work was one of twelve finalists for the orchestras International-Blitz Composition Contest in homage to Mozart. Haupango was selected as overall 2nd Prize Winner by an international jury for this competition. Chamber Orchestra Kremlin has already recorded the work and can be heard on the web site dedicated to this competition.


The Kiev Philharmonic records Walczyk's Concerto Gaucho for trumpet and orchestra in Kiev, Ukraine October 24, 2006. The work, which was composed for virtuoso Tim Morrison, earned Walczyk his 3rd Masterworks prize from ERMMedia. Trumpet soloist Yuriy Kornilov will be featured on this installment of the Masterworks of the New Era recording series.


The Thelema Trio performs Walczyk's commissioned work Refractions October 19-21, 2006 at Bowling Green State University and the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music's 27th Annual New Music & Art Festival.


The Czech Philharmonic recorded Walczyk's Voices From The Water: July 17-22, 2006 in Prague. Walczyk was selected by ERMMedia for his second Masterworks Prize. The work will be released soon on volume 12 of ERM Media's Masterworks of the New Era series. Walczyk's Celebration Fanfare was recorded by the Kiev Philharmonic on volume 5.

A native of Portland Oregon, Kevin Walczyk received a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree from Pacific Lutheran University in 1987 and the Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of North Texas. Walczyk's principal composition instructors have included Larry Austin, Jacob Avshalomov, Thomas Clark, Martin Mailman, and Cindy McTee. As an accomplished jazz arranger and composer, Walczyk refined his craft with prominent jazz arrangers Tom Kubis and Frank Mantooth.

Walczyk is currently Professor of music at Western Oregon University in Monmouth, Oregon where he teaches electronic music, composition, jazz arranging, film scoring, aural skills, and horn performance.

Walczyk’s honors include grants from Meet the Composer, Argosy Foundation, American Music Center, and Western Oregon University. He has earned prizes or finalist status from the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble’s Harvey Gaul Competition (commissioning prize), Chamber Orchestra Kremlin’s International-Blitz Competition (2nd Prize), ASCAP, BMI, Lionel Hampton Creative Composition Contest, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Wind Ensemble Composition Competition, three Masterworks of the New Era recording prizes from ERM Media, Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, Los Angeles Philharmonic Synergy project, the Lionel Hampton Creative Composition Competition, and Pacific Coast College Jazz Festival Merit of Achievement in Composition.

His works have been selected for participation by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at Bowling Green State University, Ernest Bloch Composers Symposium, College Band Directors National Symposium, Southeastern League of Composers, College Music Society, Society of Composers, Inc., and the North American Saxophone Alliance. His works have been featured throughout Europe, Asia, South America and North America and at new music festivals in the United States, Holland, Belgium, the Ukraine, and Peru.

Walczyk's commissions include the Oregon Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Third Angle Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Master Musicians Collective, the Portland Brass Society, SoundMoves, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Art Abrams Swing Machine Big Band, the Portland Youth Philharmonic, the Hutchin's Consort, the American Guild of Organists, the Institute of Chamber Music, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and many professional musicians, educators, and arts-in-education residencies.

Walczyk's students have garnered awrads that include the BMI Student Composers Awards, the Oregon Symphony Conti-Connection Composition Competition, and the Oregon Symphony Creative Kids Composition Competition. He has served as resident composition instructor and/or guest composer of youth children initiatives with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Youth Philharmonic, and the Metropolitan Learning Center of Portland.
