Date, Time and Place
The commencement ceremony for the graduating class of 2015 will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place at McArthur Field on the southwest corner of the campus and will last approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours (Graduates, please arrive at 10 a.m. and report to New P.E. for commencement instructions).
No tickets are required for the ceremony and the number of guests per graduating student is not limited.
Seating will be available in the stadium on a first-come, first-served basis. The gate will open for seating at 9 a.m. For those wishing to watch the graduation ceremony indoors, there will be limited seating in the New Physical Education gymnasium, also on a first-come, first-served basis. Undergraduate students who will be within twelve (12) credits of completing degree requirements at Western Oregon University, to be completed the following Summer or Fall term only, may participate in the Commencement Ceremony. Education students who are scheduled to do their teaching practicum in the fall term are not eligible and are invited to participate in the subsequent June commencement. Students meeting the 12-credit criteria who wish to participate in the ceremony should contact the graduation evaluators in the Registrar's Office by May. Verification of completion of degree requirements with in progress registration will be required after summer and/or fall registration opens.
Graduate students are within one to two courses of completing degree requirements at Western Oregon University may participate in the Commencement Ceremony if they have a plan on file in the Graduate Office indicating that those courses will be completed during the subsequent summer term and have approval of their advisor. Students must also have completed comprehensive exams.
Caps and Gowns
Get sized and purchase your cap and gown in front of the WOU Bookstore at the Werner University Center during the Jostens ordering event.
If you cannot attend the ordering event you may purchase your cap and gown at the WOU Bookstore after the last day of the ordering event. Orders can also be placed online through the WOU Bookstore starting on April 6. Click on "Merchandise," then "Graduation Regalia" to choose your desired products. Bachelor's degree students wear the WOU red bachelor cap and gown with a degree color tassel. Master's degree students wear the WOU black master cap and gown with black tassel and degree color hood.
WOU Official Class Rings Collection by Jostens As graduates, you are eligible to purchase your official Western Oregon University class ring. You will be able to view the rings, be sized, and place your order during the ordering event. If you cannot attend the ordering event, you may order online or by phone at 1-800-854-7464. The faculty at WOU recognizes scholarship by conferring honors distinction on undergraduate students who have earned a cumulative WOU grade point average of 3.50 or better. These students must have been in regular attendance at the university, completing at least 45 credit hours on campus graded on an A-F basis. Distinctions are conferred on undergraduate students who have achieved a WOU cumulative grade point average as follows:
All grade point averages used for commencement are calculated at the conclusion of winter term. Grade point averages will be recalculated when all coursework is completed and the degree is conferred.
Western Oregon University would like to recognize veterans during commencement with a patriotic 'Americana Cord' to be worn during commencement. The individual must have previously served, or is currently serving in one of the five branches of the armed forces: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, or Marines, including the Armed Forces Guard and Reserve Members. The individual must have either been discharged under honorable conditions or currently serving in the Armed Forces and not pending disciplinary separation under dishonorable or other than honorable conditions. Bring photo ID and a copy of DD Form 214 showing character of service in box number 24 as “Honorable” or a current armed forces ID card to room 104 in the Registrar's Office. Rain Plan The commencement ceremony will proceed as planned regardless of weather conditions. Clear rain slickers will be available for all students participating in the ceremony.
Photographs Commercial photographs will be taken as you receive your diploma and will be available for purchase from Grad Images. You will receive a passport-sized, full-color proof in the mail approximately one week after the ceremony. There is no obligation to purchase, and you will have the option of ordering from a variety of enlargement packages. Commencement Video The Commencement Ceremony will be available on High Definition Blu-Ray ($12) or Standard Definition DVD ($6), plus shipping. Shipping anywhere in the U.S. is FREE. Canada/Mexico is an additional $2, other countries $5. Order forms and payment can be done at the WOU bookstore (503-838-8300). Please allow 2-4 weeks for delivery after event.
The ceremony will be shown live on WIMPEG cable channel 17 in Monmouth-Independence.
