Myths of Hunger Lecture and discussion on the myths of hunger with Dr. Dean Braa. In this lecture/discussion we will identify the great "myths" about why people in the world are hungry on a regular basis. The goal of the presentation is to provide participants with the real and ongoing causes of hunger in the world. Hunger is about poverty and underdevelopment in vast areas of the world. Hunger is a problem of distribution of food and not the result of inadequate production of food.

Education, room 217

Tuesday, October 23 04:00 - 06:00 pm

Screening of "Food, Inc." Watch the film "Food, Inc.," with discussion led by Dr. Emily Plec. In "Food, Inc.," filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli?the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

The Camino de Santiago, or Way of Saint James, is a trail that stretches across northern Spain from the Pyrenees in the east to the Atlantic coast in the west. Pilgrims have travelled the Camino for more than a thousand years en route to the town of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of Saint James are said to be buried. According to legend, for those who walk the trail and celebrate mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, all sins are forgiven. In recent decades the number of people walking the Camino has dramatically increased, from fewer than 1,000 in 1985 to more than 250,000 in 2010.
