College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Diane E. Tarter - Interim Dean

Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences! Through a broad and rigorous liberal arts education, we help our students build bridges to their futures.

Our programs prepare students for a wide range of careers, with degrees in creative arts, humanities, and natural, social and behavioral sciences, as well as business, computer science and gerontology. We encourage intellectual breadth through the liberal arts core curriculum, numerous opportunities for minors, and programs that emphasize connections across areas of study.

Learning here takes many forms.  Students learn in our classrooms, labs, library, studios, and theaters. They learn by serving their campus and local communities. They learn from each other, encountering peers from across Oregon, the US and the world. Most important, all of our programs nurture in students the key qualities of a liberal arts education – critical thinking, synthesis and analysis, clear written and spoken communication, effective work in teams, ethical judgment – qualities that employers seek and our communities need.

In my experience, the richest learning happens where curious people from diverse backgrounds come together to learn from each other.  In Western’s intellectual community, you can identify a problem or gap in our knowledge and systematically pursue solutions or answers. You can develop your ability to tackle a difficult text and draw out its insights.  You can explore the complex challenge of capturing an idea in visual, aural or kinetic form. You can apply what you have learned in school to the real world through service learning, internships and international study. Guided by professors who love what they do, you will be an active participant in your education and part of a larger community of learners.

In particular, Western welcomes our students who are the first in their families to attend college, often carrying forward the hopes of their families. No matter what your background – traditional college student, first generation student, returning veteran, international student, transfer or returning student – our faculty and staff are committed to working with you as you complete your college degree.

Please explore the College’s diverse academic opportunities and let us know if you have any questions.
