"Shadowgirl" Author Signing

May 27, 2015, 4:00pm - May 27, 2015, 8:00pm

Hamersly Library, Western Oregon University

Please join us as YA author and former WOU faculty member Kate Ristau reads from her newly released novel "Shadowgirl." May 27, 2015 4-6PM Hamersly Library 107 Author reading, discussion, and book signing Here is an excerpt from a review: A word about fairy tales. "Shadowgirl" isn’t a fairy tale. This book is about fairies, but as a folklorist, Kate Ristau recognizes that while pixies in Fantasia dance to classical music and make moon-filled dewdrops, in earlier stories fairies could make fire and move the earth and the trees. Fairies in this book, in other words, are powerful and frightening. Ristau gets so much right with "Shadowgirl." It’s a tale about a girl trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s murder, but it’s also a tale about a brewing war in the fairylands. The main character has the typical YA search for her identity, but the discovery and the journey are so extraordinary that neither is typical. Even the love triangle, such a stable trope in the literary world, gets an expert twirl so it lands on its head. This event is sponsored by the English Department and is free and open to the public. Email kateristau@gmail.com for more information. If you have a disability that may require some accommodation in order to participate in a Western Oregon University activity, please notify the Office of Disability Services at 503-838-8250 or ods@wou.edu at least 72 hours in advance.

Can't wait for this show! ... See MoreSee Less

Eight days to opening of Frankie's Flights of Fancy. Trevor Jackson and Heather Preusse are finishing guard rails behind the seating area and stage manager Matt Whitesell (holding a toy dinosaur) and Taylor Carey (playing with Frankie's Western guns). It's a play about discovery and where better to discover new adventures than in trunks...and the show will have a lot of them!
