As a college student, you may not have easy access to a car, but you still want to get around town and enjoy Monmouth, Independence and beyond. Luckily, there’s many options around WOU for transportation and likely to be a great option for you.
If you need to get around the Monmouth/Independence area (including at night), WOLF Ride to the rescue! Whether you don’t feel safe walking home, need a ride from the store with your groceries, or it’s raining and you don’t want to ride your bike to the movie theater in Independence – call WOLF Ride at 503-428-7238. The service operates between 5pm and midnight and is free to WOU students.
Special rides are offered to/from Salem for $15 during fall term’s finals week or Jan. 4-5, 2020 to help you get back to campus if you used public transportation to go out of town for winter break. There’s an online form to sign up for this.
Cherriots is the bus service that serves Polk (the county WOU is in) and Marion (where Salem is) counties; specifically the Cherriots Regional service. This means that you can easily get from Monmouth to Independence, Dallas, Salem, and even Lincoln City! There’s a convenient bus stop right in front of Werner University Center. The 40x route is what you’ll need to look for if you want to get from campus to Salem.
You can rent cars on campus from UHaul’s CarShare program. The cars are typically parked between WUC and Ackerman Hall, and can easily be rented online or via their app. Just like any car, you’ll need to have a valid driver’s license to use it.
If you enjoy vehicles of the two-wheeled variety, there are racks all over campus to store your bikes. In front of the residence halls, classroom buildings, library and more. Don’t forget to register your bike with Campus Public Safety!
