Check out (see the Math Office) 27 (54 or 81) linking cubes of various colors to make the following pieces of the puzzle. You must have each Soma Puzzle piece as one solid color and use as many different colors as you can to make the Soma object.

Construct your set of Soma cubes using a different color for each puzzle piece

Extra Credit Assignment 11.1 (see Activity Approach, 11.1, Just for Fun)
Make ANY colored line art using thread or yarn.

Sample line art made by a WOU student!

Materials

Directions

  1. Read 11.1 Just for Fun. Decide what sort of line art you would like to make and gather your materials.

  2. Make a Paper Template: Create your set of points on paper. (you may wish to create a simple template for your plan using Geometer's Sketchpad, see the following example).

    Template

    Corresponding Art

This template is made in GSP and starts with ten points; each 1 cm apart, then the bottom row of points
is rotated 60 degrees (about the left end point) and the points are connected with line segments.

  3. Mount your Paper Template: Once you have your template / set of points, tape the sheet of paper onto your posterboard or cardstock. You can use a heavy mounting platform nd with a hammer and nail pound a hole through each point on the sheet and through the platform (use a backing that is ok to have nail marks in it!). The size of the nail for forming the holes depends on the size of the needle and thread or yarn you will be using. When you are done, carefully remove your template (don't mess up the posterboard).

  4. Measure String or Yarn: Measure the straight line distance from the beginning point to the second point on your path so you can determine the total length of string or yarn needed to form a continuous path. You may want to use multicolored thread or yarn.

  5. Thread the yarn or string: Begin on the bottom side of the platform at one of the holes and push the needle up to the front. If you are using yarn or heavy string you can knot the string so it will not come through the hole. If you are using thread, you may need something to anchor the thread on the bottom side. Try using very small washers.

Up to 15 points extra credit.
