The Great White
|
The great white shark is a ferocious predator with 3,000 teeth at any one time. Great whites average 12-16 feet long. The biggest great white shark ever recorded was 23 feet long and weighed 7,000 pounds. Young great white sharks eat fish, rays, and other sharks. The adults eat larger prey, including sea lions, seals, small toothed whales, otters, and sea turtles. They also eat dead animals. They do not chew their food. Their teeth rip prey into pieces that can be swallowed whole. A large meal can keep a great white satisfied for up to 2 months. Great white sharks are found near shore along most of the temperate coastlines around the world. There have been great white attacks but most of them have not been fata. They actually only account for about 1/2 to 1/3 of all 100 annual reported shark attacks. Of the 30-50 great hite attacks, only 10-15 people die. |
