Willkommen! Lernen wir Deutsch! My name is Frau Smith, and I teach German here at WOU. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO and graduated with Honors and a double Bachelor of Arts in Music and German. After graduation, I taught piano lessons and offered private German tutoring for a year, and then received a Graduate Teaching Fellowship Scholarship from the University of Oregon German Department in Eugene, OR. I completed my Master of Arts in German Literature from the University of Oregon and am currently working toward my PhD there as well.

I have had the opportunity to study abroad in Germany three times, primarily in Oldenburg, but I spent several weeks in Berlin, and traveled to Denmark, France, and Switzerland. Learning a foreign language brought me many amazing experiences - I have met so many wonderful people from all around the world, and our common language was German! I also had many opportunities to play, compose, and perform music, and received a scholarship to attend a Music Composition Workshop in Bayreuth one summer. As a requirement for the Master's degree, I also studied two years of Italian and took intensive language courses in Italy.

Learning a foreign language brings countless opportunities. My hope is that our students will find the German language, literature, and culture fascinating and fun to learn, and that it will offer them endless possibilities to connect with the world and their interests.

Study Abroad in Germany!

In the summer of 2010 I visited the universities in Baden-Wüttemberg, Germany, where our WOU students participate in study abroad programs. I am looking forward to helping students choose the right university and program for them, whether they decide to go for a summer, a semester, or a whole year! There are many opportunities to also study other subjects and get involved in other activities while you are there. There are also courses offered in English for those who have had little or no German. Please feel free to come to my office hours to discuss some options, and visit the study abroad office.
