Children's Books in High School Classrooms

Using children's books in high school classrooms...

... to explore themes.

... as mentor/inspirational texts.

... for creative writing.

... for language acquisition.

Inspiration from Isabella Hatkof's Owen & Mzee to consider audience.

Background: This book tells the true story of an unusual friendship between a 130 year old tortoise and a baby hippo.

Suggestions for Use: Reading both the children's book and the NPR story of this remarkable story it becomes quite apparent that these stories were written for very different audiences. After reading both stories, the students may discuss their perceptions of the intended audiences for each story. Students would then need to discuss how they know this: what elements are present in each? are they effective?
