1.
Attach a
Firewire cable to the cameraÕs DV plug
2.
Attach the
Firewire cable to the back of the computer.
3.
Plug the
camera in to save batteries.
4.
Turn on the
camera in the Playback (VCR) mode
5.
Open iMovie
6.
Click
Create Project
7.
Give your
project a name
8.
Save to the
class_bucy folder Click
Save
9.
Using the
controls on the computer,
rewind the tape, if necessary, then click the Play button (triangle) to preview
the tape.
10.
When you
get to the beginning of a part you want to include in your movie, click Import.
(Note, you can stop and then use the arrow keys to move the Playhead to the
exact location you want to start)
11.
When you
get to the end of the potion you want to include, click the stop button.
12.
NOTE: think
in terms of small clipsÑthey will be easier to work with.
13.
Repeat
steps11 and 12 to create additional clips. They will appear on the Control box
on the right side of your screen.
14.
To playback
a clip, click on it in the Control box and then click the Play button.
15.
NOTE: To
return to capture mode after you have played back clips, click on the DV camera
icon at the bottom of the capture screen.
1. Holding down the shift bar, drag the Playhead over the portion of the film you wish to cut
2. Stop dragging when you get to the portion you wish to keep
3. To fine-tune, use the arrow keys to move to the exact frame you want
4. From the Edit menu, choose Cut. This will cut the highlighted section.
To split
a clip into two clips
1.
Move the
Playhead to the place in the video you wish to cut it
2.
From the
Edit menu, choose Split Video at Playhead.
3.
You will
now see two clips on the Controls box instead of the one
To build
a movie
1.
Select the
first clip you want by clicking on it
2.
Drag the
clip to the timeline at the bottom of the screen
3.
Repeat
steps 2 and 3 to add other clips, in the order you want them to appear.
To add
transitions
1.
Click on
the Editing button at the bottom of the Controls box on the right side of the
screen
2.
Click the
Transitions box at the top right of the screen.
3.
Click
Preview to see how it looks
4.
When you
find a transition you like, drag it to the timeline between the clips you wish
to join
5.
To try it,
click on the timeline at the point you wish to start, then click the Play
button
6.
NOTE: if
one clip is highlighted (blue) only that clip will play. To play through
several clips you must highlight all or none.
7.
NOTE: It takes a few moments to render the
transition. During this time, playback will be choppy. You can monitor the
progress of rendering by watching the red line on the transition clip.
To add a
title
1.
Click on
the Editing button at the bottom of the Controls box on the right of the
screen.
2.
Click the
Titles box at the top right of the screen and choose a style
3.
Watch the
small screen at the top for a preview
4.
Highlight
the current text and type your title at the bottom of the control box
5.
To play the
title on a black screen, click Over Black. To play over the video picture,
leave the box unchecked.
6.
To make
colored text, click the box next to Color and choose the color you want
7.
When done,
click on the T (in blue box) and drag the title to the timeline where you wish
it to play. (Before the clip you want it to play over).
8.
Wait for
the title to render (this takes several moments)
9.
Click Play
to view your finished title
10.
You may add
credits, etc. at the end in the same way.
To add
sound effects
1.
Click on
the Media button at the bottom of the Controls box on the right of the screen.
2.
To listen
to a sound, double click on it in the drop-down list
3.
When you
find a sound you like, click and drag it down to the timeline. NOTE: the
timeline will automatically change to show two audio tracks. You may place your
sound anyplace on either audio track. You may also drag it to move it after it
is placed.
NOTE:
To switch back and forth between the timeline views (with and without audio
tracks showing), click on the icons just above the left side of the timeline.
The filmstrip icon shows video clips only; the clock icon shows both video and
audio,
To add
music
1.
Put a CD in
the CD drive
2.
Click the
Audio button on the controls box
3.
Select the
track you want
4.
Drag the
track down to the first soundtrack on the timeline
5.
To cut off
extra music, place the Playhead at the point you want to end, then choose Edit
> Split Audio at Playhead
6.
Click on
the portion you donÕt
want, to select it.
7.
From the
Edit menu, choose Cut
8.
To turn off
the original soundtrack, unclick the box at the far right on the video
timeline.
You
may do this for individual clips or for the entire movie.
NOTE:
Follow essentially the same directions to add other sounds.
To
adjust sound volumes
1.
From the
View menu, choose Show Clip Volume Levels
2.
A thin line
will appear on each of your audio tracks
3.
Click on
the line where you want the sound to start fading in or out.
4.
A small dot
will appear.
5.
Drag the
dot down to decrease the sound. Drag the dot up to increase the sound
OR
1.
To adjust
the volume evenly on an entire clip, select the clip by clicking on it
2.
In the ÒClipÓ
box at the bottom of the screen, reduce the volume to the percentage you desire
OR
1.
To turn the
volume completely off for an entire track, uncheck the box at the end of that
track.
To
extract the audio from the video so you can edit small bits of it
1.
Click on
the clip(s) you want to extract audio from by clicking on them
2.
From the
Advanced menu, choose Extract Audio
3.
The audio
will be removed from the video and will be placed on the audio tract below the
video, still synchronized
4.
You can now
edit parts of the audio track
5.
To select
one portion of the audio, place the playhead at your start point
6.
From the
Edit menu, choose Split Selected Audio Clip at Playhead
7.
Repeat this
process at your end point
8.
You may now
click on the section between the start and end points to select it, and you may
delete it, or make changes to just that one section of audio
To play
a clip in fast or slow motion or to play a clip backwards
1.
Click on
the clip you want to change to select it (it will turn blue)
2.
Click on
the Effects button at the bottom of the control panel on the left side of the
screen
3.
Choose Fast
/ Slow / Reverse
4.
Change the
options as desired
5.
Click Apply
To save
the final movie
Option 1: record back to digital tape
1.
Click the
Share Menu
2.
Click on
Videocamera at top of screen
3.
Adjust the
settings at the bottom as desired.
4.
Make sure
the camera is connected to the computer with the Firewire cable
5.
Set the
camera to the VCR (playback) mode
6.
Put a blank
tape in the camera (or fast forward to a blank place on the tape)
7.
Click Share
Option 2: Quicktime Movie (for
use in PowerPoint and other programs)
1.
Click the
Share Menu
2.
Click
on QuickTime at top of screen
3.
Change
ÒCompress movie forÓ setting to CD-ROM
4.
Click Share
5.
Save it to
the Desktop (from there you can drag it to your users folder, or onto a
burnable CD)
1.
Hold down
the Eject key to open the CD drive
2.
Insert your
burnable CD and close the disk drive.
3.
Click OK
4.
Your CD
will show up on the Desktop
5.
Drag the
files you want to burn onto the CD icon.
6.
Drag your
CD down to the Trash icon (it will turn into a gold and black disk icon)
7.
In the
window that appears, click Burn
