"Walls" form - detail

This form can be made visible by clicking the "add/edit" button on the Walls summary form (tab marked "Walls" in the main window).

An example is shown below:

Walls Details Form

The current job number appears at top center. If this number does not correspond to the job number you are currently working on, close this form and go back to the "main" tab - there, enter the number of the job you wish to work on. Then go to the "Walls" tab and click the "Add/Edit" button again. The correct job number should now show in the window.

The "help" menu in the upper left corner is able to give you a conversion chart for fraction to decimal conversions, a symbol chart for the types of doors you'll be entering, and an "about" box that tells you who made the program.

Adding Measurements To A Job

If the current job has data already entered, each of the entries will show in the data display as per the example above. If this is a new job, there will be no data showing in the data display. The procedure for adding new walls to this form is the same in each case.

Wall Number

This can be either a sequential number or a sequential letter. What matters is that it be in a sequence that is easy to follow. Skipping parts of the sequence results in confusion later in the job. Keep it simple, and stick to the sequence that is started.

Area Number

This should always be a number; entering an alphabetical character in this field will result in an error message.

The data you will enter here will also be used in the "Windows" and "Doors" forms - in order to calculate the net square footage for each area, the walls and windows and doors in that area need to be designated with the same number. If you enter this data correctly, the totals will be correct on the report. If the totals are not correct, then back-tracing your entries will likely show that a window or a door was designated for a different wall.

Existing Wall Type

Clicking the "Symbols" button will show a list of the recognized types for walls. Enter one of these. (Example: if it is a concrete wall, enter "C" in the field for Existing Wall Type.)

Width (in feet)

Unlike the windows or doors, which are measured in inches, the dimensions for the wall are entered in the number of feet. Entering the number of inches here will cause the total square feet figure to be astronomically high.

After measuring the wall's width with your tape measure, type the number of feet into this field. For fractions of a foot, say for example the wall measures 40 1/2 feet wide, then enter the decimal equivalent for this number (40.5 in this case). You will get an error message if you try to enter fractions directly (example: "40 1/2"). Click the "Chart" button for a list of fraction-to-decimal conversions, and use one that suits your needs.

You will also get an error message if you enter the traditional single-quote for foot ('). Only enter the number for the measurement.

Height (in feet)

After measuring the wall's height with your tape measure, type the number of feet into this field. As with the width, you must use the decimal equivalent for fractions rather than entering a fraction directly. Also, as with the "Width" field, do not use a single-quote to signify feet (').

You will notice that when you have filled in both the "Width" and the "Height" properly, that a figure for " Gross Area in Sq. Ft." will be automatically calculated and presented after the equals sign. This figure will be passed to the database when the net square footage is calculated for the area.

Insulation

You have a choice of three options here: "Blown", "Batt", or "N/A" (in the case of walls where the question of insulation is not material). Choose the one that pertains to this particular wall. You may have a mixture of "Blown" and "N/A" within an area, and a mixture of "Batt" and "N/A", but if you have both "Blown" and "Batt" within an area then you will not be able to get a true figure for net square footage of insulation type. Keep this in mind as you are assigning area numbers to certain walls within the job site.

Existing R-Value

Either a number can be entered here, as per the example, or the letter "R" can also be included. If there is none, you may type "none" or "N/A".

Proposed R-Value

As with the "Existing R-Value" field, you may enter a number or a text description here.

"Enter" button

After all of the data fields have been filled in, then you may click this button to update the data display. If you have left any of the fields blank, you will get an error message and the data display will not be updated.

Enter data carefully! Once you enter a line of data in the data table, it cannot be removed except by a database administrator. If you have entered a line by mistake, you can re-edit the line and place a zero in the "Width" and "Height" fields to keep it from having an effect on the net area total. The next part (about "Editing Measurements") will describe how to change data in an existing line.

Editing Measurements In A Job

This allows you to change data for any of the walls present in the data display. To edit a wall, click on its row in the data display. It will be highlighted. You may now click the "Edit" button, and the data will be moved to the fields above so that you can change what needs to be changed. If you click this button without highlighting a row in the data display, you will receive an error message.

You will notice that the "Wall Number" field cannot be edited during this process - this is to keep the same wall from being duplicated in the database under different numbers. All other fields can be changed as may be necessary. After all changes have been made, click the "Enter" button at the top right. This will update the data in the data display and your changes should be reflected in the new list of walls.

Wall Heaters

This section allows you to indicate whether the job site has inside wall heaters, outside wall heaters, or "knob & tube" wiring. This section has its own "Enter" button, and can be updated independently of the rest of the data on the form. Simply clicking "Yes" or "No" on the appropriate button, then clicking the "Enter" button to the right of those buttons, will make the necessary changes.

Ceiling Height

Measurements for each possible ceiling height measurement can be entered in this section. Four blanks are provided, but most jobs will require only one or two. Entering "N/A" in the fields that don't apply to this job will be sufficient. As with the "Wall Heaters" section, this section is updated independently of the rest of the form. Clicking the "Enter" button below these fields will update this section. You will receive an error message if you leave any of them blank.

Comments

A space has been provided for the auditor to make any comments that may be necessary. This also has its own "Enter" button, to the right of the comment field. Click this after entering a comment, and the database will be updated.

"Done" button

This is the button that will close the form when you're finished entering or changing data.
