Newsletter Assignment
Desktop publishing may serve the teacher in several
ways. You may create a short newsletter to communicate with parents about
class events. You can create a forum for student publications. You can
have students create their own "newspapers" reflecting cultural
and historical events from a specific time period.
In addition, "desktop publishing" software can be used to
create attractive and useful handouts, work sheets, pamphlets, and brochures
to enhance your own instruction.
In this exercise, you will integrate several of the skills that you
have learned in the past weeks - acquiring and manipulating images using
the "drawing" tools and page layout options of MS Word, Publisher,
or AppleWorks. You will create a four page newsletter that might be used
with your class - a newsletter to parents, or a student-created publication.
- Use a two-column layout overall for each page of the newsletter.
- You must include at least 1 original scan/digital photo/downloaded
photo in your newsletter, as well as at least 4 pieces of clipart.
These
must be laid out / integrated with the text stories, i.e., displayed "text
wrapped" on the page.
- The first page of the newsletter should
have some sort of "masthead" -
title, date, and publisher (you!) of the newsletter in large bold print.
- You must have at least 6 "articles" within your newsletter.
You may use the supplied newsletter text for the body of your articles,
composing your own headlines / titles / bylines, etc.
- Use the draw tools for "borders" around your articles,
dividers, accents, etc..
- When finished, print out your pages. Print
them in B&W (no color! — If
it doesn't look good in B&W/shades of gray, then work with it until
it does; this will be particularly important with scanned photos or
other found art).
- Then, go to a copy service and do the following:
- Using the double-sided copy feature, put pages 1 and 4
together to make one 11 x 17 copy.
- Then do the same for pages 2 and
3
for the flip
side.
- Fold the large copied sheet in half to see your pages
in order: page 1 (front), pages 2 and 3 (facing), page 4 (backpage).

This assignment is worth 40 points. You will be evaluated on:
completeness (did you include all requirements?)
attractiveness (of layout, graphics, and fonts)
