Course Goals - Students will:

·          Survey the historical, philosophical, and theoretical background of technology and uses of computers.

·          Survey the instructional uses of computers in the classroom by

·          Learn to use the computer as a teaching tool by

o        becoming familiar with both hardware and software;

o        using application software to develop word processed documents, create presentations, and edit graphics;

o        participating in discussions around the use of the computer in classrooms;

o        acquiring skills in the use of computer networks and telecommunications;

o        using a authoring program to create an online lesson

 

Competencies - Upon completing this course, the student will be able to:

·         recognize and define computer terminology, concepts, and equipment related to the uses of computers in educational settings,

·         effectively apply word processing, presentation, and graphics software to instructional and management tasks in the classroom

·         work effectively on computer tasks both individually and in small learning groups,

·         author a short computer generated lesson in a chosen content area,

·         read and summarize professional literature related to computer/technology use in the classroom, and provide personal and professional reactions based upon relevance to instructional outcomes

·         produce a short, but specific reflective paper on the potential of applications and integration of computers within the student’s respective instructional setting.

Grading:

Assignments are listed on the class schedule. Due dates and possible points will be provided on the instructions for each assignment or on the class schedule. All assignments should be completed by the beginning of the class session listed on the instructions. This is important as certain assignments may serve as basis for discussion in a given class session. Late assignments may be accepted, rejected, or penalized at my discretion. Final grades will be allotted according to these percentages.

    C        73% - 83%
