Weekly reflections

This was a slow week, and I feel like I have little to show for my efforts. I guess the most important thing is simply that I was here this week to serve as acting director while Janeanne & Gary were both away. I survived, and the library survived me! I made good progress working with Ron on stuff related to the accreditation self-study. We now have a list of names to work from, and we've started to recruit people to serve on the Standard 5 teams. I made some progress on getting coverage fields added to resource records in ERM and uncovered a few database glitches in the process. I also started writing the review for the LRTS article I was assigned.

The LT2 Serials and Electronic Resources Assistant search is over! This was a pretty good search, with several attractive finalists. I felt bad having to turn any of them away, but I only had one position. The person we hired has a great background that should hopefully help us revolutionize this position, so I'm very excited about working with her. Both the library and I survived a week with me at the helm as acting director. Phew! I got my first LRTS article to review this week; my review is due on Sept. 5th. I also met with Ron Swartzendruber to discuss strategy for completing the section on Standard 5 for the accreditation self-study, and I cataloged two Ella Fitzgerald CDs that required tons of added uniform title entries. I'm slowly getting more proficient and comfortable with cataloging sound recordings. My progress, of course, is nothing compared to that which Paul made this week.

This was a whirlwind week! My major accomplishment was conducting three interviews for our half-time LT2 - Serials and Electronic Resources Assistant position. I also cataloged two sound recordings, worked more with Paul refining the sound recording cataloging guidelines, and, today, I attended a meeting of the accreditation self-study steering committee. I finally met Ron and set up a meeting with him for next week to discuss strategy for co-chairing the task group responsible for Standard 5, Library and Information Services. Preparing for that meeting will be a major focus next week, along with completing reference checks for the LT2 search.

Weekly reflections

It has been a busy and productive week. I worked reference on Sunday the 17th and filled in for Janeanne as acting Library Director Monday through Wednesday. The network migration on Tuesday didn't disrupt my productivity too much, though I still have a few things to learn about the new web-based e-mail client. We made good progress on the half-time LT2 search, and I met with Paul to discuss local policies and procedures for cataloging sound recordings. The librarians met on Tuesday to continue our discussions about reorganization needs, and I polished up and submitted the annual report for the Collection Management Unit.

First Entry

After having this on my "to do" list for weeks and weeks, I have finally taken the plunge and started my blog. What a nice way to end the work week! Don't have much to say here, as I'm still trying to figure out how our fancy MoveableType blog system works. So, I'll stop now.
