Add a music journal?
A member of the Music faculty has requested that we purchase a subscription to the journal Tempo.
Journal subscriptions are a significant recurring expense for the library, so I would like to give all members of the Music faculty and other interested individuals an opportunity to provide input prior to placing an order for this title. Please post your comments here or send them to me via e-mail at lincics@wou.edu.
Pertinent facts:
- An online only subscription to Tempo (least expensive option) will cost about $76 for 2006. This price represents an 8.2% increase over the 2005 subscription price.
- Tempo is indexed in two journal article databases to which the library subscribes: Music Index and Arts & Humanities Search
- We currently have online access to the full-text of all issues of Tempo except those published in the last five years via JSTOR
Questions for faculty to consider:
1. How do you envision using this journal to support academic programs in Music at WOU?
2. Do you feel that adding this subscription will provide enough benefit to academic programs in Music to justify the expense associated with maintaining the subscription for at least five years? (keep in mind that subscription rates generally rise every year)
3. Is this journal more valuable than other journals currently on the Music serials subscription list? Can you identify any subscriptions that you'd be willing to cancel in order to minmize the budgetary impact of adding this subscription?
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
Shirley
