GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q: Where can I find pictures on the class web site?

A: All of the class labs & activities have pictures in them. If you want to duplicate one of those pictures you can open the lab or activity (off of the web site) and cut and paste any picture you like.

General Story Problem Questions / PICTURES

Q: I don't understand why the story problem directions say NOT to model a solution in the illustration section, and also NOT in the solution sections. Shouldn't the solution be modeled at least in the solution section?

A: Actually the idea of the story problem is to focus on the mathematical concept, not on the manipulative use. Even though it is a manipulative class the story problems aren't about manipulatives. For portfolios I expect complete, carefully explained modeling. For the story problems I expect you to "just do the math" for solution. See the next question and answer for some additional picture notes.

Q: Where can we find pictures for the story problems?

A: For the story problems the pictures should just be simple, non-manipulative pictures. For example, if your problem is "Jimmy has 13 apples and his sister gives him 12 more apples, how many apples does Jimmy have?" then you picture should be of two groups of apples, one group with 12 and a second group with 13 apples. The picture=illustration is just to help you double check that your story makes sense. You can draw the pictures or you can use clip art (Microsoft word, etc) to embed pictures. I only recommend doing this if you are already comfortable with that technology. Otherwise, it makes the most sense to use the story forms in your course pack and draw simple pictures.

Q: The directions for the ILLUSTRATION part of the story problems says to draw a simple sketch . . . (not manipulatives). How are you suppose to draw a picture to illustrate that many objects without using manipulatives?

A: Excellent question! Please draw a representative sample of the objects and label with the correct number. It could be a box or bag or pile of apples or ...?

General Portfolio Problem Questions / PICTURES

Q: Are there any places on your web site that describes what a certain manipulative is composed of? You mentioned making general descriptions and use them over again in other portfolio problems. I just can't seem to find the descriptions anywhere.

A: In the portfolio directions, on pages 2 & 3 the procedure for creating reusable manipulative pages is described. In the examples the generic Cuisenaire Rod description is given and you can copy it, otherwise you have to create your own page, they are not already made and on the website. Thinking about how to describe the various manipulatives is part of the assignments. Note: For the portfolios following Labs 1 & 2 you use: Attribute Blocks, Color Tiles (or blocks), Bean Sticks and Cuisenaire Rods. Only the Cuisenaire Rods will be used again (and, in fact, frequently) for this course.

Portfolio 4.1

Q: On Portfolio 4.1 is it okay to have my Cuisenaire train extend to another line if the train is too long. For example the 56 train will not fit across the paper.

A: You have several options. One is to just make the rods small (for example, if the orange rod is 1 inch long everything fits pretty well), you don't have to draw rods to scale. Another is to use smaller than real life rods (for example let the orange rod be 1.5 inches long) and use a landscape orientation for your paper (the horizontal is the long way). Try these two options rather than having the train run over two lines.

JOURNAL READINGS & BOOK REVIEW

Q: Should a hard copy of the journal articles be filed in the notebook for verification or in an independent "resource" notebook?

A: Please file copies of the journal articles in your notebook. These articles are meant to supplement the core of the course and will hopefully be a valuable resource later when you are engaged in your teaching career.
