Naming Service
I was able to move the final server into the new naming service last night. It was quite the process, and a weird issue came up that almost caused us from not moving forward.
I'm still seeing a message appearing in the message log file, that I don't like, but will continue to monitor them.
The only other thing I'm at all concerned with is performance. The authentication server on the backend is way more beefy than the nis server, and cougar is the same so I would expect a boost in performance.

Cougar Migration
First off let me say sorry about this morning's mishaps.
Part of the migration is to move the servers into a new naming service; which gives UCS lot's more flexibility on the server, more security features, and faster performance. Nearly all of the production servers on the campus network have been moved into this new naming service with zero issues. I came in last night at 12:00am to do the move. It appeared to be successful. I monitored it all night, with everything looking good. There however was a network quirk, which caused the server to become nearly unusable, and of course this issue did not come up until 8:05am this morning. At 8:10am this morning I re-booted the server. It took about 20mins to come back up; and once it did all services were active.
I apologize for any issues this may have caused.
This move into a new naming service is a neccessity, and we will be going through the process ( taking into account what we learned last night ) within the next 2 weeks. Again we'll be working off hours to minimize any campuswide downtime.
Thanks again for your patience.
-Travis

New Students coming
Students they are a coming, and we're trying to be as ready as we can. We just created another 300 accounts. About 1/2 of them were returning. We're going to try to do the account creations on a more regular basis now.

Cold Fusion Enterprise
ColdFusion enterprise edition has been installed on the new webserver. What does this mean to the avg. joe you ask? Not much. But it will make it easier for depts. wanting to write database driven web apps much easier.

Move mail
I started the mail move for existing students today. I'll be doing it in batches of 500 or so. The first ones are off and running. Will update the blog when they're done.

Support $$
We lucked out today. We had a disk go bad in a disk array which is not under a support contract. Luckily we had a spare disk for a completely different type of hardware that worked with it.

Reactive
Because we have so much going on, I'm finding I am having trouble being proactive. I'm moving forward on stuff and putting fires out, but I have a hard time stopping and looking at what we do have and making sure its up and running 100%. Fully patched etc..
I definately stay up on all the security patches. But sometimes the "feature" patches, or bug fix patches slip through the cracks. This is partly because we _are_ on the leading edge of technology with some of our apps. And we knew going in we would have some weird issues.
Abruptly cutoff.. guess that's it for now.
