My Courses at WOU
WOU Links |
Teaching I have been responsible for ten courses in my first two academic years at WOU; these courses meet the critical needs of not only the department and the geography majors, but also those of other programs and students. The following table provides details on the courses in 2003-2004:
In addition to these classes, I also work with students on their “independent studies”: “Geography of Sweden” (CRN 21398) in Winter 2004, and “Map/Brochure” (CRN 31482) in Spring 2004. Further, GEOG 407H (Geography of Coffee) was scheduled for Fall 2004, but had to be cancelled because of low enrollment. The preparations are not only in terms of in-class lecture and activities, but also with respect to the PowerPoint notes and Web pages I maintain for each course. I have also set up mailing lists for every course (such as geog413@wou.edu) so that I can email them news and articles and maintain office hours in cyberspace. Research and Scholarship I continue to pursue an active research agenda. · In June 2003 I completed and submitted o The research work, “Alternative Governance Structures”, commissioned by the Smart Growth Coalition of Kern County. o A book review for The Professional Geographer · In August 2003, I presented my research findings at a public forum organized by the Smart Growth Coalition of Kern County · In September 2003, I presented “Back to the Future: “Ten big questions” and “the two cultures” at the 66th annual meeting of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers · In February 2004, I presented “The Irrelevance of Geography” at the annual meeting of the Oregon Academy of Science · My commentary/letter was published in the Winter 2004 issue of the Journal of the American Planning Association · In March 2004, I presented “Regional Planning is Dead: Long Live Regional Planning” at the 100th Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers. · Have submitted “How I Learned to Love my New Home: A Tale of Two Cities” for possible publication in the Oregon Planners’ Journal · I am exploring the possibility of submitting a full-length paper based on the presentation at the 2003 APCG conference. · Working on papers that I can draw from the sponsored research on Alternative Governance Structures that I can submit for possible publication in refereed journals. Service A. Institutional · I maintain the department’s Web pages, which includes a Web page that lists potential employment opportunities for students majoring in geography. · Represented the department at the Winter Preview for prospective students. · Am the division’s representative to the Faculty Senate, and the Dewey-Smith Committee. · Was one of the initiators of a Social Science Symposium series · Am the faculty representative to the WOU Foundation · Working on information competence with colleagues outside the division · Volunteered as a judge in the State Geography Bee competition that was held at WOU on April 2nd. B. Professional · Authored a letter on Measure 30 that was published in the Register Guard · Presented my research findings at a public forum in Bakersfield. Academic Advising As a second-year faculty I have formally started advising students—three, of whom two are on the “Honor Roll” J I also informally advise students, and sometimes follow up with formal emails to their respective academic advisors. I am disappointed that I have so far been unable to motivate students to charter a geography students club L
