The following is the summary of my activities in 2002-2003. Click here for the 2003-2004 summary Teaching I am excited that I have taught eight different courses in my first academic year at WOU. I proposed to the Honors Committee a new honors seminar on the geography of coffee; it has been approved and I will teach the course in Fall 2003. As a new member of the geography faculty at WOU, I have new preparations every term. · The preparations are not only in terms of in-class lecture and activities, but also with respect to the PowerPoint notes and Web pages I maintain for each course. · The only constant in all the terms is GEOG 106 (Introductory Economic Geography). Preparation for this course, which I first taught at WOU in the fall term, began even before I relocated to WOU; in summer 2002 I worked with the publisher to customize the textbook. In the winter and spring terms, I have continued to fine-tune my preparations for GEOG 106. · Other courses that I have taught, or am currently teaching, (in addition to GEOG 106) are: Fall 2002: GEOG 310 (World Regional Geography), GEOG 413 (Urban Geography) Winter 2003: GEOG 410 (Global Issues), GEOG 418 (International Trade and Transportation) Spring 2003: GEOG 409 (Practicum), GEOG 425 (Urban Planning and Policy), GEOG 440 (Geographic Information Systems) Research and Scholarship I continue to pursue an active research agenda. · In October, presented a paper on “Using Local Short Stories to Teach Geography” at the 65th annual meeting of the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. · In November, submitted a paper, “Excuse Me, Is It “Affect” Or “Effect””, for possible publication in the Journal of Geography in Higher Education. · On March 5th, presented a paper on “Quality of Life and Economic Development” at the 99th annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers. · In March, was invited to review a book for The Professional Geographer, which is published by the Association of American Geographers. The review is to be submitted before June. · Am working on the final chapter of the research work commissioned by the Smart Growth Coalition of Kern County. I started working on this project in September, and will complete it in May. Service A. Institutional · It was, and is, an exciting year in the department particularly because of the proposal to convert the curriculum from three to four credit courses. Our proposal was approved by the curriculum committee and will soon be acted upon by the Senate. · I maintain the department’s Web pages. · I also maintain a Web page that lists potential employment opportunities for students majoring in geography. · Represented the department at the Fall Preview for prospective students. · Am the division’s representative to the Academic Information Services Committee. · In late fall, was invited to talk to students in the Enrichment Program. · Volunteered as a judge in the State Geography Bee competition that was held at WOU on April 4th. B. Professional · Authored two commentaries that were published in the Statesman Journal. · Completing the research work for the Smart Growth Coalition. A public presentation of the study will likely be sometime in June. · Met with the chair of the Planning and Policy Management department at the University of Oregon in order to establish professional connections that will help the department and students in the long run. · My membership in the American Planning Association has been updated to reflect change in the affiliation from the California chapter to the Oregon chapter. Soon I shall start making connections with planning practitioners that will help the department and students in the long run. Academic Advising Even though am not a formal advisor to students, I advice students on their academic, and post-academic, plans. Two specific examples: · One student was able to get a paid internship because of the information I gave her; she has since switched her major to geography. · Am working with two other students to help them with their graduate school options. I continue to advise former students as well · One of my CalState students, for whom I am a reference, emailed me an exciting news that he has been accepted to the doctoral program at the University of California-Riverside, and he will annually receive fellowships and graduate assistantships worth about $20,000 dollars, in addition to the tuition waiver J · Another gained a paid internship at one of the agencies to which I referred him.
