The word “geometry” refers to measuring the earth and, in a nutshell, that is what this proposed course is about.  The field of geometry dates back to the interest to locate places on the planet and to make precise measurements of areas and distances. In this course, students will gain a good understanding of the history and making of maps, and the application of mathematical techniques in mapmaking.  The course will, therefore, be an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of: the history of maps, basics of spherical geometry as applicable to mapmaking, map projections and problems, and the use of computers in mapmaking.

There is no prerequisite for the course.  Students who have completed the introductory course sequence of GEOG 105, GEOG 106, and GEOG 107, or MATH 251 and MATH 252 will find this to be a wonderful “depth” course on top of those “breadth” courses.  However, none of these introductory courses is considered prerequisites to this course.
