Thirty percent of the grade is for class participation and assignments that reflect an understanding of the topics and the assigned reading materials.  If you are not present, then, of course, you will not be able to participate in class discussions.  Not being familiar with the readings will result in low participation scores.
Before class begins every Tuesday, you will come prepared with the following homework completed:
  • Provide your summary arguments, with appropriate evidence from the readings, on why that particular global issue for the week is an important one. Bulleted list is enough--lengthy paragraphs are not needed
  • Highlight any disagreement that you might have with the ideas in the articles. Bulleted list is enough--lengthy paragraphs are not needed
  • A map of the country, that also shows at least two neighboring countries
  • Note that often the readings refer to more than one country.  In that case, take this as an opportunity to look up the map of the country with which you are least familiar

Of course, any writing that you do for this class has to be double-spaced, spell-checked, .... and all the rules of college level writing.

A take-home midterm exam will be worth thirty percent.  Your response will be an essay, about 1,750-words long (about six to seven pages.).  It will be due the Thursday of Week #6, and you will have slightly less than a week to work on the question that I will give you.

A 3000-word paper, which will be a take-home final exam, will be worth the remaining forty percent of the grade.  I will give you details towards the end of Week #7.

While fulfilling these requirements, please remember to strictly follow the university's policy on academic (dis)honesty.
