More in depth

I've continued to week out by delving head first into EDsmart. As painful as this is, I'm definitely worried about the timelines. I don't believe they are attainable, but I've started anyway. My work list for yesterday included:

Work list for today, however differed, as I had to take (my own) time to travel to Portland for the 2007 INTERFACE to see seminars and converse with colleagues in the systems security field, which is where I should be eventually focusing my work, and managed to make a few good contacts. I still managed to get my 40 hours in for the week and even dealt with some EDsmart issues:

  • Received questions and concerns from Kimber dealing with the reporting capabilities of edsmart
    • -Discrepancies between totals and the actual details
    • -Worried that there is data that is "lost", not being pulled up when asked for, but still being counted
    • -within cohort/gate groups, where are duplicate entries, sometimes as many as 4
      • --I haven't been able to find many duplicate students, so I'm assuming the query was written incorrectly
    • -Apparently there's been confusion all along about which term to enter or search by with the faculty
      • --How do we verify the data?
      • --How do we know which term to search for a student?
      • --I don't have a good answer for this
  • Kimber sent me a specific example of the student info showing duplicate entries.
  • Request to have the faculty drop down list default to Select.. Rather than a name.
    • -Not sure what all that will break. Have a bad feeling
  • Many issues being contributed to Firefox. Apparently Mark has a lot of IE specific code.
  • Received call from Cheri about getting secondary and replacement permits available online
  • Went to INTERFACE in Portland to attend seminars and talk to colleagues (on own time)
    • -Email Confidential: An Introduction to Messaging Security
    • -Guarding Against Malicious Threats from Within: NAC
    • -Protecting Yourself from Today's Web-based Threats
    • -Disaster Recovery & Replication
    • -Creating an Infrastructure to Support Incident Response
    • -Email Security Best Practices
    • -The Other Hand: Lesser Known Best Practices
  • Able to meet and get contact information from two people that will be able to forward me lots of great info and how-to's in setting up good security practices
  • Met Michael Curtis with OR Dept of Police and we talked about LEDS and the firewall. Apparently not set up right and needs to be redone. He offered to come out and help.
