Computing System Changes -- September 2007
To all WOU computer system users:
Please be advised of the following computing system changes, effective September 19, 2007:
1. Each user will be required to document that they have read and agree to the Acceptable Use of University Computing Resources policy on an annual basis.
2. Each user will be required to document they understand that WOU computer account activity may be monitored.
On-line documentation will occur automatically when you select the affirmative check-boxes found in the account lookup application: http://www.wou.edu/accountlookup
The following paragraphs were taken from the WOU Acceptable Use of University Computing Resources Policy:
Keep in mind that shared systems are inherently insecure. An authorized Computing Services or computer lab staff member may access accounts and transmissions for troubleshooting and maintenance--and, if there is reasonable suspicion of misuse, they may access them for investigative purposes. You should also be aware that security systems whose purpose is to identify unauthorized users of a system may also monitor authorized users.
It is the policy of the university not to monitor individual usage of any general facility. However, the university reserves the right to monitor and record the usage of all facilities if it has reason to believe that activities are taking place that are contrary to this policy or OUS, state or federal law or regulation and as necessary to evaluate and maintain system efficiency. The university has the right to use information gained in this way in disciplinary or criminal proceedings.

How and when will existing users be prompted to access the account lookup application annually?

An e-mail reminder will be sent to you one month, two weeks, one week, three days and one day in advance of account expiration. Below I have included a sample one month notice. The others are similar.
Dear Bill Kernan,
Your Western Oregon University Account with the username kebil is about to expire.

I tried to enter the account page but it said my info was incorreect. Is this site applicable to emeritus faculty?
This is a system wide change. Please call the service request desk at 503-838-8925 or come in to UCS located in ITC009 and the Service Request Desk will help you through the process.

2. Each user will be required to document they understand that WOU computer account activity may be monitored.
What sort of monitoring are we talking about?
Also, does this monitoring still apply to students using their own computers within the residence halls?
When we receive subpoenas from the outside agencies such as the FBI or Oregon Department of Justice, we provide them with identifying information.

I'm not comfortable using my SSN. What can I do?
Please visit the Service Request Desk in ITC009 and they will assign you to a technician that will help you change your password.

When I hit the link to go to the page to accept it I get the following error:
Database Log In Failed
TNS is unable to connect to destination. Invalid TNS address supplied or destination is not listening. This error can also occur because of underlying network transport problems.
Verify that the TNS name in the connectstring entry of the DAD for this URL is valid and the database listener is running.
What do I do? Do I need to be on-campus for this to work?
The account lookup application will work from anywhere. Please confirm you visited: http://www.wou.edu/accountlookup
You may have visited the site during system maintenance.
