History & Philosophy of Geography
This course offers historical perspective on the development of geographic thought. Significant debates and perspectives on the nature and purpose of geography are reviewed and related to larger social, historical and scientific movements and contexts. We will focus, in particular, on geographers' engagement with questions related to sustainability.

Learning Goals & Outcomes: In taking this course, you will learn to:

  • Discuss the diversity of philosophies of geography.
  • Evaluate contemporary and historical debates among geographers over the nature and purpose of the discipline.
  • Practice critical thinking and communication skills, with a special emphasis on disciplinary writing.
These goals reflect the geography faculty's commitment to students being able to, "explain important elements of geographic thought and practice," and institutonal commitments to student learning in Written Communication.

Format: This class is fundamnetally a seminar, organized both online and in weekly class meeting (T 2:00-3:20 in NPE 113). The course also functions as preparation for the Capstone in Geography and Sustainability.
