History & Philosophy of Geography
This course offers an historical perspective on the development of geographic thought. Significant debates and perspectives on the nature and purpose of geography are reviewed and related to larger social, historical and scientific movements and contexts.

Learning Outcomes: This course is intended to help students in "Becoming conversant in geographic thought and practice", one of the major learning outcomes for geography at Western Oregon University.

More particularly, students in this course will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the diversity of philosophies of geography.
  • Engage with contemporary and historical debates among geographers over the nature and purpose of the discipline.
  • Show refinement in their critical thinking and communication skills, with a special emphasis on writing.
Format: This class is fundamentally a seminar, meaning that it is focused on close readings and discussions of course texts and other materials. One important purpose of this course is preparation of majors for their Capstone Experience in geography.
