Required Readings

Richard Etulain, Telling Western stories: From Buffalo Bill to Larry McMurtry (Albuquerque: The University of New Mexico Press, 1999). Referred to as "Etulain" on the course calendar.

Molly Gloss, The jump-off creek (Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1989). Referred to as "Gloss" on the course calendar.

Clyde A. Milner, ed., A New significance: Re-envisioning the history of the American West (New York: Oxford University Press, 1996). Referred to as "Milner" on the course calendar. Individual chapter authors are indicated in parentheses.

There are also a number of readings online and on reserve at the Hamersly Library. These are indicated on the course calendar. DVDs screened in class will also be placed on library reserve. The three required books are on library reserve. Assigned readings are due for the week under which they are listed on the course calendar. Unless otherwise noted, assume that all listed readings are required.
