Graded assignments

For students enrolled in GEOG 411W (CRN: 10378), grades will be based on the following assignments:

1. Structured discussion. Before each reading assignment, I will assign questions or topics for you to react to. You are responsible for writing short responses to these questions and topics. I will collect and grade these assignments. Responses should clearly indicate a sincere attempt to engage with assigned reading. They will also be the foundation for class discussions. If you miss a class meeting, you can send me your reactions via e-mail or to my campus mailbox in Maaske 217. I should receive these by the end of the class session you will be missing. Topics and questions will be posted to the class weblog as well as presented in class. This assignment is worth 15 points, one point per discussion. You get one pass.
2. Blogging. I have established a blog for this class on the University blogserver. This assignment is explained in further detail on a separate handout. This assignment is worth 20 points towards your grade in the class.
3. Field exercises and portfolio. You will be assigned a series of field exercises which you will organize into a single portfolio. During week 10 and finals week students will present their portfolios to the class. This assignment is explained in further detail on a separate handout. This assignment is worth 60 points in total.
4. Learning assessments. These are short tasks or questions that I will generally present at the end of the week. Their purpose is to help me gage what you're learning week-to-week. Each assessment is worth 1/2 point, and 5 in total.

Final grades will be assessed on a standard 100 point scale (93+ is an A; 90-92 is an A-; 87-89 is a B+; 83-86 is a B; 80-82 is a B-; 77-79 is a C+; 73-76 is a C; 70-72 is a C-; 67-69 is a D+; 63-66 is a D; 60-62 is a D-. Lower than 60 is an F).

Students enrolled in GEOG 511 (CRN: 10381) will complete the above work and an additional project designed in consultation with me. Graduate student grades will be assessed on a 120 point scale: 111+ is an A; 108-110 is an A-; 104-107 is a B+; 99-103 is a B; 96-98 is a B-; 92-95 is a C+; 87-91 is a C; 84-86 is a C-; 80-83 is a D+; 75-79 is a D; 72-74 is a D-. Lower than 72 is an F.
