Popular Culture in Global Perspective
This course looks at the production of popular cultures across national boundaries. Japanese toys and related media - TV shows, animation - and tourism are important case studies. We will also pay attention to the manner in which "globalization" has become a cause, effect, and object of contestation in the creation and critical examination of transnational cultures.

This course focuses on one of the learning outcomes established for geography at Western Oregon, that students will, "Understand the role of geography in society".

More particularly, by the end of the term students will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of popular culture as multi-scalar and transnational.
  • Be able to "map" local-global connections and variations in the sharing and production of popular cultures.
  • Develop the capacity to think critically and geographically about "culture".

Format: Class sessions will involve discussions of assigned reading and viewing and discussion of supplemental materials and media.
