The Changing American West
This course focuses on conflicts over regional identity and meaning in the contemporary American West. Particular attention is paid to how changes in the region's culture and economy have been, and can be, interpreted. A variety of popular and academic sources will be looked to in developing these interpretations, including documentaries, feature films and critical histories of the region.

This course is intended to:

  • generate dialogue about life in the 21st century West
  • encourage critical thinking about the current state of the region and Western identity
  • lead to broader reflections on the connections between geography and identity and the meaning and significance of regions
  • improve critical thinking and communication skills more generally
