Syllabus & Texts

Texts: The course texts have been chosen for the quality of their material; many students find that these books enhance, or form the foundation of, a professional teacher's library. While it may seem at first that one or the other does not address your chosen grade level, you'll find the crossover easily made.

Wood Ray, Katie. Wondrous Words. NCTE

Dornan, Rosen & Wilson. Within and Beyond the Writing Process. Allyn & Bacon
As part of this course, you also should become familiar with the full tier of Oregon Writing Benchmarks and Standards (copy them from: http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/results/?id=223) and the following site for scoring practice: (www.openc.k12.or.us/scoring/). I will show you how to access/search for articles in the library, tied to the Reading Logs assignment; if you forget, consult a librarian or come to see me.
You will also begin to acquaint yourself with professional journals-a good place to start is the NCTE [National Council of Teachers of English] journal at your chosen level:
college-College English or College Composition and Communication [CCC] or English in the Two-Year College;
high school-English Journal;
middle school-Voices from the Middle;
elementary-Language Arts.
