English 399
Science
& Literature
The
goal of this course is to explore some examples of how science/scientists
have been presented through literary texts, fiction and non-fiction.
We will start out the term with texts that focus on medicine and human
medical experimentation and gradually move into texts which deal with
other aspects of science. However, one idea I want us all to keep in
mind as we read is that in some way all science explores the human connection
to the universe, and hence explores the Self. Ethics and moral issues
enter naturally into the discussion, and I will expect an atmosphere
of respect for a wide variety of viewpoints as we examine such issues
in class discussions. Disagreement is fine; just be sure to treat differing
opinions with the same respect you yourself would want ["do unto
others as you would have them do unto you"]. Every person's views
are welcome, indeed expected, in class discussion. If you EVER feel
that your views have not been respected, please come and talk to me
if you don't feel comfortable raising the issue in class.
