Unit 6: Examining the multicultural education framework
You will use the book Rethinking our classrooms: teaching for equity and justice Vol. 2 A rethinking schools publication for unit six work.

In groups of approximately 3 people: Please read one of these chapters before the two tasks.
1. Where I’m From: Invitins students’ lives into the classroom by Linda Christensen pp. 6-10
2. Ebonics and culturally responsive instruction pp. 22 -26
3. Teaching the unsung heroes by Howard Zinn and Bill Bigelow pp. 33-41
4. On the road to cultural bias by Bill Bigelow pp. 45-56
5. Fiction posing as truth pp. 57-62
6. Students blow the whistle on toxic oil contamination Larry Miller and Danah Opland-Dobs pp. 144-148
7. Maps, maps, and misrepresentation pp.112-115

After reading the chapter you will match the content of the chapters with the theory of multicultural education contained in the articles and excerpts we have read for class so far. For example; on pp. 22 the author writes “the researcher believes that, by ages 8-9, these children became aware of their group membership and its importance to their well being, and this realization was reflected in their language”

Because you have read the excerpts and articles in unit 3 you know the issue quoted pertains to identity. Your task is to interpret the chapter using the multicultural perspective, how does this framework help you make sense of the other issues in your chapter? 2 pages.

Plan a lesson using the chapter as an exemplar. What do you want the students to learn? What skills do you want students to obtain? Please make sure that part of the content and skills that you want your students to learn are based on the multicultural theoretical framework. 2 pages
