COURSE PURPOSE and CONTENT

The purpose of this course is to let mathematics majors and minors experience a selection of topics in geometry.  This emphasis in this course will be on explorations, discussion, and writing. The authors of the book hope that each student will gain a deep understanding of the meaning of geometry and perceive proof as "a convincing communication that answers –Why?."

COURSE STRUCTURE

Class will be a mix of explorations activities both individually and in groups, and discussions. Please bring your text to class every day!

ATTENDANCE

Daily attendance is required for your success in this course. If you miss class it is your responsibility to ask a classmate about what you have missed. I will not have discussion notes available if you have missed class nor will I repeat my discussion during office hours

HOMEWORK

  • Homework from our textbook and outside of the textbook at times, will be assigned on a daily basis and will be due on the following class day. Completing your homework in a timely fashion will be integral to your success in this course.
  • Homework assignments will be returned to you with comments and suggestions and they then will be due again within a week (unless your work is complete the first time). The idea is that these homework assignments will turn into an opportunity to grow mathematically, to develop ideas, and to grow in your knowledge of the subject matter.
  • You are to use your own ideas for the homework. Sharing with classmates is allowed but using other sources (e.g. other books, Internet, etc.) is not. You need to work on constructing your own understanding of the material.

LAB HOMEWORK

Lab homework will be assigned a number of times during the term. These labs will be done outside of class, yet we will have presentation and discussions of their results. The use of Geometer Sketchpad will be expected.

FINAL PROJECT

You will be assigned to do a group final project in this course. This project will focus on a topic in geometry that we have not covered in the class. It will be your responsibility (with my help) to learn about this new topic and present it to your classmates.
