FTP additions
since I moved FTP from AVIATION to MASH, the lack of group drives (i:\) has been a sore spot for me. Due to the restructuring of the groups share from groups\sharedfolder to just sharename we lost the ability to FTP to the I drive. The solution, it turns out, was the simplest of answers. You see, I kept looking to replicate what we had before. I was mired in overthought. However, last night it hit me that I could simply created an FTP point for each departmental level share that we have.
I was at work prepping the 007 lab anyway, so I went ahead and created each of those points. I had told Ron that I'd be getting him content to update the web page. For folks who wish to FTP to their i drive they'll simply use the shortname that I've entered (i.e. ucs:, or studenthealth:) and they're in business.
It's midnight, I've worked all day since 7:30 and don't have the energy to make this blog link rich. Here's a nifty site :Click Here

Student Printing Up and Ready for Stress Testing
Well, now that SOAR is done for a few moments, I had the time window to migrate the server that holds the Student Printing (well Sunday...but that counts, doesn't it)?. Overall, it went fairly well. I've applied the fall term 225 credits to the Student group.
For those familiar with the printing approval and management of printing jobs, you likely will recognize a change in the user login process. The former system involed username and password. The new method uses the format of mash\username and password. There is an ini file that originally listed the netBIOS name of the NT 4.0 PDC (kitty_nt). I've tried multiple variations of this with a MASH DC. I'll contact the developer to determine if this is an AD issue, a version issue or simply a configuration issue that I have overlooked. I expect that this will be determined by the end of the week.

The Move of the move of the Lab Printers moved (or something like that)
Well, in this entry, I spoke about a scheduled date for moving the student lab print server. With public pressure from the Library, that date was pushed forward. Turns out that was a bad idea. Soar begins tomorrow and the prospecitive students will still require access to the printing functions of the labs. So it does appear that the date proposed (then altered) is once again viable.

Student Lab Printing will be offline on Aug 25th
Tailspin_NT is the print server (and print balance account manager) for the student labs. Rick Thompson, the Lab Manager, is ready to begin setting up the labs for fall term. These will all need to point to MASH to be useable. In order to print, Tailspin will need to be migrated as well. While I anticipate this change going quickly, I wanted to ensure that WUC and Hammersly Library were notified that printing in those areas may be offline for that entire day.
I'll be reconfiguring PCOUNTER to query the MASH domain for use print balance and logging. It's currently running on a server with dual PIII procs. I plan to relocate that to a faster/better machine over the Winter Break...

Migrations are proceeding apace. We recently knocked out two very large ares in the forms of NS and Library. The staff in both areas were very kind and helpful.

Migration...so what's it to ya?
You've heard that you are going to be migrated. If you're reading this, presumably you'd like more information. As a sufferer of short attention spans, I'll keep this in chunklets.

Otherwise, the text should focus more on what you, the user, will notice as changes to what you currently have.

The new domain, which is called MASH, is a Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain. There are currently two Domain Controllers, hosted on SunFire v20z's
These boxes feature some way cool stuff. Most notably is the support for hardware level RAID (read OS independent). They have Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Server installed. The advent of an Active Directy (or AD) based network for WOU causes big bright smiles...at least for me. I'm able to make enterprise-wide changes on the client machines quickly, in one place. This offers a degree of granular control that we completely lacked.
With the implementation of multiple domain controllers, we'll have much more greater better network redundancy (the prior statement was, in itself, a poor redundancy pun...not a horrible grammar faux pas).
