Importing Address Book into OS X Mail
Well as some may know, UCS supports three email clients. Both Mac and PC users have access to Communications Express. On the PC side you can use (and very tightly integrate with Communications Express) Microsoft Outlook. Mac's have OS X Mail.
One of the Downsides of using the OS X mail is that you do not have access to you Address Book or Calendar. Calendar access is still only done through the web (Communications Express). I have, however, found a decent method of getting your Addresses imported.
Step 1:Login to Communications Express
Step 2: Click the Address Book Tab
Step 3: Click the Import/Export Button. Make sure to choose "Microsoft Outlook CSV" as the format for export.
Step 4: Note the Filename and Save to a spot that you can find again (maybe the desktop) Close Communications Express.
Step 5: Open the Application "Address Book." If you don't know where it's located click here to see how to get to it.
Step 6: Import the file you saved Here's a picture of the menus you need to choose to do so...

FTP additions
since I moved FTP from AVIATION to MASH, the lack of group drives (i:\) has been a sore spot for me. Due to the restructuring of the groups share from groups\sharedfolder to just sharename we lost the ability to FTP to the I drive. The solution, it turns out, was the simplest of answers. You see, I kept looking to replicate what we had before. I was mired in overthought. However, last night it hit me that I could simply created an FTP point for each departmental level share that we have.
I was at work prepping the 007 lab anyway, so I went ahead and created each of those points. I had told Ron that I'd be getting him content to update the web page. For folks who wish to FTP to their i drive they'll simply use the shortname that I've entered (i.e. ucs:, or studenthealth:) and they're in business.
It's midnight, I've worked all day since 7:30 and don't have the energy to make this blog link rich. Here's a nifty site :Click Here

Training Classes
The bulk of my training has focused upon Windows 2003. This was the vehicle that got us to be able to migrate to our new system. (or at least do my part which is the Windows Domain).
I attended a 14-day training camp through The Training Camp. This certainly got me where I needed to be, but I wish the focus had been more on training and less on test prep. The other side to this coin is that I then was forced to study all aspects, even things that we do not currently use. This has already paid off with new projects.
I also supplemented this with a online training through http://www.vtc.com. This was a fair supplement.
My non-2003 training has been self driven. I am a DCSE (Dell Certified Systems Engineer). Every so often I need to re-up their exams. I have to use their self study materials to pass their exams. In the last 14 months, I've re-upped twice.
I have Apple Certification CDs to cover as well....yeah right. There's no time for this at work. I spend enough of my free time at home doing blogs and other work. I expect that this time limit will expire before I can dedicate the time to get this cert as well.
For those interested, I've placed what this covers. This was a very good (and harrowing) experience. Studying items that I don't use in a daily routine can only lead to improvements in our network.

Sophos AntiVirus
When the time came to renew our AntiVirus product, I knew that I would be looking around. Command AntiVirus simply didn't perform well enough to merit using it a second year. Sophos AntiVirus has caught and squashed a number of nasty beasties roaming around on WOU workstations. I pulled two reports that display just how well it's working.
Click here to see the report for this month:Monthly Report
Click here to see the report for the year (Jan to present):
The reports themselves are clickable. If you wish to know more about a particular infection, you can click on the Virus name (title). One of the points in Sophos' favor is the strength of their website.

...Lest Ye be Judged
Yesterday, my life was an Ancient Chinese Proverb. I lived in interesting times. At the onset of one of the largest migrations possible, my PC's Hard Drive decided it would cease and desist all moving and storing of data. While I follow our own policy of not storing documents on the local hard drive, I do have a great deal of customization that allows me to do my job. I'm sure for those who have shared this fun experience, I'm not telling you anything that you don't already know. Since I'm also the resident Macvocate, I was able to at least have a desktop with internet access. I'm in the process of setting up the new drive now.

Terminal Server Cluster Up, Ready, and Tested
Well I forgot to post this earlier this week... We have the three members of the terminal server cluster setup and working. Troy and I struggled with the mirroring process until I recalled the unique identifier for the Network Load Balancing solution. Once we mirror a termserv, one needs to change the name, change the IP and set the unique ID for the Terminal Server Session Directory.
In addition to brining these three machine up, we also logged into 2/3 of the thin clients in the ITC lab. This was all of the machine that were available at the time. We put each of the station under a much higher load than we expect individual stations to achieve. The performance was outstanding. It is my hope that the students and faculty receive this well, as this could easily become the future of the lab and smartclassrooms.
