Ch 337 Lab Final Study Guide

You will need to be able to apply the techniques that you learned in your experiments to new situations. You will be given at least one laboratory scenario that will require you to apply the principles and techniques you used to a laboratory procedure you have not done in the lab.

Here is a list of some things you will need to be able to do. This is not necessarily a complete list of all topics that might be on the exam.

Give detailed instructions for setting up and carrying out any of the techniques you have done in the lab including:

Melting point
Micro boiling point
Thin Layer Chromatography
Recrystallation
Extraction
Distillation (both simple and fractional)

Be able to analyze hypothetical experimental data which is presented on the exam
Know the purpose of the different reagents and lab materials and how they are used
Be able to do any calculation that were done in any of the labs
Be able to generalize any reactions that were done so you can apply them to reagents that are similar to those you used
Be able to solve unknown problems
Be able to look things up in the reference books available in the lab room

This is NOT an open book or lab notebook exercise. The only things you may use are a pencil and calculator. The calculator must be a stand-alone calculator and not the one on a cell phone! You will have a maximum of 50 minutes for the exam. The remainder of the period will be spent learning how to deduce structures from spectral information and cleaning out of lab drawers. You will need to check out of your lab drawers and return your keys during this laboratory period.
