WOU Student Buddy Notebook format

  • Keep all of your Math Buddy work in one 3-ring notebook; you may use dividers if you like
  • You may not keep other Math 396 or other course work or materials in your Buddy notebook
  • Label the front of your notebook with your first and last name
  • File items in your notebook in the order they are listed
  • Outline of Math Buddy Schedule (tentative)
  • Praise and prompt guidelines

The Ferris Wheel
Solve the Ferris Wheel problem and write up your solution for your ACES Math Buddies to reply to and score. You must use the Ferris Wheel question page. Download a new copy if you need it (LB, RW). Keep your solution on this one page (you may use front and back) and write clearly and neatly.

Your buddies and their teachers will see your solution; do your best work and write so that a fourth or fifth grader can understand your work and your solution path.

General Directions
Write a one to two page draft Introduction / Problem 1 response letter to each of your Math Buddies.

Use Buddy Response paper
Type and don't change the settings on the paper. It is font 14, 1.5 inch left margin and 1 inch right. Print single sided for class. You will eventually need to email your letters to your instructor.

We will discuss writing for fourth and fifth graders and review your draft Buddy letters.

These letters do not need to be filed in your buddy notebook, but you may include a copy there if you like.

  1. Using what your learned and did at the Writing Workshop; COMPLETE your letters to your Math Buddies
  2. Email your correctly named letters to your instructor by 12 noon on Saturday as attachments (please do not paste letters into the email)

Assessment
Your first set of Buddy Letters is worth 10 points for the set. Each time we return the letters for revision, we will take off 1 point, if you are late responding (you should always respond within one day), we will take off 1 point per day late for response.

We will discuss scoring using the Oregon Scoring Guide and will complete our Round R1A Buddy letters by adding approved scores to completed and approved letters.

  1. Download P1B (revised) Buddy scans from Moodle (available late Friday, 2/1)
  2. Review the official scoring guide (here is a helpful scoring document)
  3. Prepare draft response letters and scores for each of your buddies. Use the ideas in the Math Buddy Praise and Prompt Guide. For Prompts, your suggestions should be about problem solving in general, not a rewrite of this specific problem. The kids will not redo this problem again.
  4. Bring your draft letters as HARD copy (typed or hand written) or electronically on a laptop that you bring, to class on Monday. You'll have to share letters in class.

  2. Review the official scoring guide (here is a helpful scoring document)
  3. Prepare draft response letters and scores for each of your buddies. Use the ideas in the Math Buddy Praise and Prompt Guide. See the extended directions for this problem that were passed out in claps on Friday, 2/15.
    Be sure that your praises and prompts align with your scores.
  4. Share your letters with your instructor (by email or Google drive, as instructed in class) by Saturday at 12 noon.

  2. Review the official scoring guide (here is a helpful scoring document)
  3. Prepare draft final response letters and scores for each of your buddies. Use the ideas in the Math Buddy Praise and Prompt Guide. Remember, your buddies will continue problem solving, so for prompts, give them general advice for future problem solving. You can say stuff like "when you solve problems with your spring term buddy" or "when you solve your next problem". Be sure that your praises and prompts align with your scores.
  4. Share your letters with your instructor if you want feedback (let them know by email) and feel free to work with your partner while you are working on your letters.
    Google drive templates are set up for both classes
