On Thursday, May 27, 2010, Western Oregon University will celebrate student academic excellence. The entire day will be dedicated to the presentation of student scholarly activities, including original research papers, projects, artwork, performances, and upper-division course projects, presentations, and papers. The showcase will again be organized by the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and the Program for Undergraduate Research Experiences (PURE). To demonstrate the importance of student scholarly pursuits at Western, the Faculty Senate is encouraging the faculty to cancel their classes, while at the same time requiring students to attend their peers’ presentations. The primary objectives of the Showcase are to provide an opportunity for presenters, giving them experience that will be useful in furthering their education and careers, and to expose the entire student body to the breadth and importance of the scholarship that is being conducted across campus.
What is our role in Showcase?
- Our class is scheduled for an afternoon session, 1 - 4 p.m., on Thursday, May 27 (session location Willamette Room, WUC).
- Our session title is: Lesson Ideas for the K - 8 Classroom
- Each of the Lesson C Teams (1 - 7) will give an shortened "repeat performance" of their Lesson C presentation.
- Order of presentations TBA. If you have a conflict with the 1 - 2 p.m. time, please email your specific conflict to Laurie asap. If you have a class, please check with your instructor. We are all encouraged to have our students attend Showcase rather than class. If you are in the Ed Program, please check with your team leaders regarding the COE plan for Showcase attendance.
- Each team is scheduled for 20 minutes. Timing is critical and completely inflexible.
- Technology and materials available:
- Overhead projector (LB can easily make overhead transparency slides)
- Projecting laptop computer (for websites, PPT, etc.)
- Small whiteboard
- Any manipulatives / materials we carry with us
Which Showcase Sessions Should We Attend?
- Your own (!)
- You are not required to attend every presentation in our session; you may wish to attend presentations in other sessions that are offered at the same time.
- You are REQUIRED to attend Showcase Sessions from 2 - 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 27.
How do we Prepare ?
- Tuesday, May 25 is a designated "Showcase Group Work Session." However, you are giving a public presentation and your team should meet and plan your presentation prior to this two-hour work session.
- It will be critical to communicate and work with Laurie to make sure all of your materials, copies (if any), etc. are finished, packed, available on Thursday, May 27.
- Laurie will not hold classes on the day of Showcase and will be available to help your team as needed.
- ON THURSDAY, MAY 6: Each team needs to submit an ABSTRACT to Laurie for the Showcase proceedings. Proceedings for 2006 - 2009 are linked to the Showcase site. Your abstract should be 50 - 100 words, with a 100 word limit and should be a simple paragraph describing your presentation. Your team should work on your abstract once the approved lesson list is posted on Wednesday, May 5. Your typed abstract is due by the end of the Thursday, 5/6 Lesson C Work Day class session. If your team does not have a laptop in class, you can borrow a Math Department laptop or the computer at the Instructor station to type your abstract during class.
Presentation Guidelines
- Your presentation should be about 1/2 the length of your in class presentation
- It will probably be the most interesting to include your audience at least a little during the presentation.
- We can carry anything we need over to the WUC.
- If you prepare slides or a PPT, standard guidelines are:
- Leave at least a 1" margin on all four sides of the text.
- Use no more than 12 lines per sheet, and leave ample space between lines.
- Use 28 point or larger font
- Limit each transparency or slide to one topic.
- Light colored font on a dark background is hard to read for everyone. Use crisp contrasting colors for PPT and black and white only for transparencies.
Presentation Assessment
- Assessment Rubric (modified version of assessment criteria from syllabus) linked here.
- Scores will be 100% of assessed score for each group member unless group submits a different division—must be signed by all team members
So, in a nutshell: Do Lesson C, discuss it with your group, plan a shortened version, write an abstract for the Showcase booklet, work on your shortened version in class, practice, show up and present at Showcase (making all of us and your mothers proud) and have a good time!
