Math 251 Exam Review Notes
Materials & Procedures for Exam I
- Exam 1 covers only Chapter 2
- You will need your calculator (no TI-89 or equivalent)
- You may use one side of a 3" by 5" notecard with notes--this means you may use 15 square inches of notes in any paper form. Typed, handwritten, regular notecard, cut paper, napkin, wax paper, engraved...
- Exam 1 is on Friday, April 27. You have two hours for the exam.
Studying for Exam I
Carefully do the Web Assign Exam I Review Homework assignment.
- Write out each problem and carefully show your work, if you just have messy scratch work, or just do the work in your head, it is not likely to help you correctly prepare for the exam.
- If you are not perfectly clear on a problem, look over the class notes / powerpoint for the section, read over the corresponding textbook section and try a similar example with a solution (in the notes or book).
- Look over the Chapter 2 Review Topics (page 164): #1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16
Review all of your Written Homework for Chapter 2
- Notice, in particular, that you need to use tables to approximate derivatives in your homework, you will need to know this skill.
- Notice, in particular, that you need to use the limit definition of the derivative in your homework, you will need to know this skill.
- In WebAssign, they show you graphs and ask you questions. On your written homework you are often asked to sketch graphs with various properties. Be sure to carefully review all "sketch a graph" written homework.
- For "review" I recommend that you redo the problems without looking at the answer.

- Exam II has two parts:
- Part A: Derivative rules
- Part B: Written/Problem Solving questions
- You may use a calculator (no TI-89 or equivalent)
- You may use one side of one 3” x 5" notecard

- This is a 10 question assignment, try using it as a practice test--only take it when you are ready, don't look at your book or notes, use a calculator or use any other resource. Time yourself, it should take about 20 minutes.

- Keep in mind that you need to know the basic unit circle and exact trig function values: Know 0, pi/6, pi/4, pi/3 and pi/2 (just calculator values are not enough). Check out: Unit Circle
