Text: Class notes and copies of the necessary material.

Who: This class is intended for students who are (CS) mathematics major/minor.

Goal: We review main topics in logic & proof techniques and learn some new material, sets and set operations, cardinality, functions, and induction. We will learn main counting methods such as permutations and combinations. We also learn topics such as inclusion/exclusion principles and Pigeonhole principle and related applications.

Homework: Homework will be assigned periodically.

Midterm Exams: There will be two in class midterm exams, Midterm I on April 22 and Midterm II on May 20. There is no make-up for missed midterm and homework.

Final exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given on Friday the 10th of June at 12:00. The final is given in our classroom and it is required for all students. There is no early final exam.

Grading:
     Homework        25%
     Midterms           50% (two at 25% each)
     Final                 25%

Grades will be assigned (roughly) according to the following scale ("+" and "-" will be determined later): A   90-100%;   B   80-89%;    C   70-79%;  D   60-69%;   F   30-59%

• Attendance and tardiness policies: If you miss class, you may review the class notes that I try to post on Moodle. If you are consistently late to class (3 minutes or more), I will ask you not to attend the class until you resolve your time conflict.
• Electronic Devices' Policy: You are not allowed to use any nonacademic electronic devices (Ipod, MP3 players, cell phones, etc.) during the class time. If you bring your cell phone into the class, you MUST turn it off. If you need to have your cell phone on, you need to talk to me prior to class.

1. Come see me during my office hours or by appointment;
2. Work with your classmates;
3. If you have a documented disability, which requires any academic accommodations, you must come to the Office of Disability Services (ODS) for appropriate coordination of your accommodations. You can come by APSC 405 or contact ODS at (503) 838-8250 (V,TTY) to schedule an appointment.

General guidelines for success:

1. Attend every class and take notes;
2. Study and do written homework daily;
3. Review the notes after each class discussion/lecture;
4. Ask questions about concepts, techniques or ambiguities as soon as possible;
5. Use the support available: me, and your classmates;

plan to spend 6 or more hours per week outside of class studying!
