POW Directions
For each POW assignment, you will be given a specific problem to solve.

• Carefully write up the work that you do solving the problem.
• Show your solution path and all of your work.
• Clearly note strategies and failed attempts.
• “Picture perfect solutions” are not your goal.
• Communicating your problem solving process, as well as accurately solving the problem, is your goal.
  
• For each POW:
• Look at your copy of "Mathematics Problem Solving Tips", it gives easy to understand tips on how to demonstrate your problem solving skills.
• Look at your copy of the state scoring guide. The state scoring guide will be used to score your work.
• For the POW problems in Math 211 please write on blank, lined or graph paper and label the upper right hand corner with your name, Math 211 and the POW number (example POW 1). An official scoring stamp will be used to record your score at the top of the page.

Common Core State Standards (CCSS)
The Common Core State Standards Initiative ( www.corestandards.org ) is a state-led effort developed in collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and experts, to provide a clear and consistent framework to prepare our children for college and the workforce. At this writing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have already been adopted by 45 states, the District of Columbia and 4 territories and will have a significant influence on school curricula across the country.

Because the CCSS are so important, you will be asked a few questions in which you look at specific standards and/or practices and answer a few questions about them. To answer the CCSS questions:

1. Read the CCSS question (use the link on the homework and schedule page and scroll to the correct question number).
2. Go to the CCSS math standards and practices via this link. Carefully read the corresponding component of the CCSS math standards and practices (the question will say where to look) .
3. Answer the question. You may hand write or type.

CCSS Scoring Guide

• Completeness
• 2 points for a complete and thorough answer that uses key ideas and topics directly from the CCSS and key examples from the CCSS or your text (as requested in the question)
• 1 point for partial, but not complete response; indicating some understanding but lacking some key topics or uses only partial example from the CCSS
• 0 points for incomplete answer lacking key topics or examples from the CCSS
  
• Accuracy
• 2 points for completely accurate work (may include finding correct examples)
• 1 point for partial, but not completely accurate work
• 0 points if the work is not accurate


• Communication
• 2 points if all explanations are clearly and fully explained
• 1 point if explanations are only partially clear
• 0 points if explanations are unclear or missing


• Presentation
• 2 points if all work is neat and pleasingly presented (includes neat and labeled diagrams and sketches or neat and clear example given)
• 1 point if the work is at all hard to read or follow on the page, if diagrams are messy and unclear or unlabeled, or if the requested example is unclear
• 0 points if the work is too messy to read

• 1 point for partial, but not completely accurate work
• 0 points if the work is not accurate


• Communication (applied to whole problem)
• 2 points if all problem solving and explanations are clearly and fully explained
• 1 point if problem solving and explanations are only partially clear
• 0 points if problem solving and explanations are unclear or missing
