Other Interesting(?) Web Sites

• Slashdot - an interesting collection of all kinds of "news for geeks". The web site allows for extensive community input and has lead to an entire genre of software to run such web sites.
• O'Reilly is more than just a publisher of books. They operate a large number of web sites related to such topics as Java, Python, BSD, Linux, MySQL, and Mac OS X.
• A relative of O'Reilly is Safari, which is an online library. The have a number of plans of varying cost that let you access PDFs of pretty much every book by O'Reilly and a lot of other publishers.
• Apache is more than just a web server. The Apache Foundation hosts a number of projects and project families. One umbrella project of particular interest for CS students at WOU is the Jakarta project, which is all open-source Java software.
• Educational/Instructional Operating Systems wiki here on campus.
• MINet doesn't have a real web site yet, so I started a wiki page.
• The folks at After College have set up a job placement listing just for WOU students.

Journals and Magazines

• Network Magazine is a trade publication about networking, naturally. Among other things, they have a good selection of tutorials.
• Software Development Magazine is a trade publication about many aspects of software development, including topics beyond just programming. There offer a few free email newsletters.
• Java World is a good source for tutorials and tips on various Java topics. It's a good way to keep track of new technology offerings. They have a number of email newsletters you can subscribe to for free.

Important/Useful Tools

• CygWin provides a pretty complete set of Unix tools for Win32 including a number of real shells, compilers, editors, text utilities, etc. Using CygWin is a great way to extend Windows and learn Unix, without having to set up a *nix system.
• JUnit is a unit testing harness for writing Java unit tests. There are a bunch of other *Unit harnesses for lots of other languages too.
• Vim is an improved version of the vi editor on Unix. The cool thing about it is that it runs identically on Unix, Windows, Mac, etc. It's a very powerful editor for programmers by programmers. It supports syntax highlighting for a few dozen languages, and it's extremely extensible if it doesn't do something you want it to do.
