What's New

Construction!

If you have been around the building at all, you know that construction is taking place! We are scheduled to have the new office areas in the interior spaces ready by about September 15, 2011, while the new expanded lounge and conference room will be ready by about October 20th. Click here to go to the Construction and Remodel page to see the pictures and latest updates on the construction and remodel!

Sustainability News!

The Werner University Center is committed to try and update the facility to save energy, water and other natural resources. Not only is it good for the environment, but it is also good for the student's pocketbooks! Our latest efforts have been adding dual-flush systems to the toilets in the WUC. These handles go up (for liquid waste) and go down for solid waste. They use less water for liquid waste, saving thousands of gallons of water each year!

We have also started to expand our composting efforts. We will be adding additional rolling compost bins for our conference rooms. Why you might ask? It's because when catering events take place, all of those items go right into the trash bins. By placing a rolling compost bin in for catered events, that much stays out of the landfills!

Our future efforts include replacing our antique and horribly-inefficient heat exchangers and other mechanical equipment. These beasts soak up large amounts of electricity and are relatively out-of-date. The problem with replacing them? Up-front costs! It will cost $35,000 to replace each unit with a newer, more efficient model. We expect to make those costs back within 5-6 years, however. We just need to save our pennies to be able to replace them. Once those up-front costs are paid for, each replacement could save students some significant money from their student fees and use far less energy.

WUC Projects

We are always tinkering and adjusting the Werner University Center to meet the campus' needs! A couple things we are working on will be a 3-year replacement of almost all of the carpet in the common areas in the WUC. The carpet we have down is about 11 years old and is getting problematic. Our amazing custodians keep it clean and in good shape, but there are seems coming up and it is getting worn down. Each year for the next three years, we will be spending about $25,000 to replace areas of carpet throughout the facility.

The video games room was pretty much a bust! (Insert WAH WAHHH sound here). Despite student feedback a year ago saying that they wanted this to be in the WUC, it was never really utilized. We are going to evaluate that space and move the game units and TVs into different areas and conference rooms. We will put that equipment to good use for all students of the WUC!

Programs

The Werner University Center is establishing a number of continuing programs in the facility each year, working to make them better and more fun each year they occur! We feel that the WUC should be an energetic place where students and community members can have some levity on campus! As such, our programs for the year will be:

  • Premiere Night - Tuesday night of New Student Week - this is new student's program to explore the services of the WUC with free food, prizes, games and more!
  • Halloween - We decorate the building for Halloween week, offering up scary contraptions, images, sounds and more!
  • Holiday Decorating - As we near the winter holidays, the facility is decorated after Thanksgiving to show some holiday cheer.
  • Pirate Night - YAAAWWWRRRR! Look for the WUC to transform in a pirate way with food, music, and other pirate-related programming.
  • Hawaii Day - A Taste of the tropics with pineapple, music, decorations and other events! Come join us while the weather is still gloomy for some much-needed warmth and cheer!
  • WOUMania - WUC's traditional carnival program is a HUGE hit with 700 people participating in games, activities, food, prizes and so much more. Click here to go to the WOUMania homepage!
