Discover Leadership is a new program at Western Oregon created to help students, who may have limited experience with leadership, learn essential skills to increase their confidence and enhance their knowledge, as well as to prepare them for different leadership opportunities on campus.

When: Students will meet roughly once every two weeks throughout winter and spring term. Each session will focus on a new topic with a different on-campus presenter. Each week will include teambuilding activities and an opportunity to network with other student participants. The first session is from 3-4pm on Saturday January 29 at the Focus on Leadership conference. All other sessions will be Wednesday evenings.

Who: Any student who wants to enhance their leadership skills! The program is geared towards students who do not have a lot of leadership experiences and are new to WOU.

Why: This is a great stepping stone to becoming an RA, PLUS Team advisor, Summer Bridge leader, or participant in any other leadership opportunity on campus. It’s also a great way to meet new friends and learn about campus resources.

Cost: FREE! All participants that complete all the workshops will be invited to an off-campus retreat in April. There is no cost to the participants.

Discover Leadership is a program designed to give students a feel of what it takes to be a leader. Over the course of three months, the participants will attend seven workshops on different topics that will give them the tools to be successful leaders on and off WOU campus.

All workshops will take place on Wednesdays from 5:30-7:30pm in the Calapooia Room in the Werner University Center. Feel free to bring food!

The Workshop Schedule is as follows:

  • January 29th (Saturday) 3-4pm: This will be a session during Focus on Leadership in the WUC. It is recommended you sign up for all of this conference, but if not, please show up to attend the first meeting!
  • February 9th: Team Building: Participate in team building activities that will help everyone get to know each other a little more.
  • February 23rd: Problem Solving: Learn about the many different levels of problem solving whether it be with coworkers or just friends.
  • March 9th: Group Development: Come learn why groups don’t always function like they should, and how you can help your group achieve success!

  • May 1 (Sunday) All Day: Come to a group retreat to help wrap up the program and have a good time! Time to get off campus and test what you have learned!
